Of the Canadians with cystic fibrosis who died in 2013, half were under 35 years of age. Cystic fibrosis occurs when a child inherits two defective copies of the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis (one from each parent). Lung transplantation is the only definitive treatment option for cystic fibrosis patients with end-stage lung disease, but it is still not a cure.
